Weather and Widgits

Weather reports for Singapore and (especially) my mac weather widget are completely useless. Just because some part of the island may be getting struck by lightening at say 4:30pm for an hour, it's officially a stormy day. The mac widget updates with the reality once a day is past so it perpetually looks like we just had a great day and now we're heading into six days of storms. Let me translate the above forecast: expect it to actually be hotter than speculated every day and sunny or hazy with a chance of flash thunderstorm at random. Repeat.

  1. ha ha ha ..... that is funny!!

Way back in October 2008 I did a blog posting on Singapore weather ... well I have done about three actually!

    http://leonefabre.blogspot.com/2008/10/bit-about-weather-in-singapore.html

and you are right, for such a small island it is amazing how it can be so different from one end of the island to the other ..... I can phone a friend to warn her about the storm on it's way ... and she does not get one drop of rain. She only lives 15 mins from me!

... and something else to note when looking at 'temperature' .... the humidity + temperature will also give you the "heat index" which really is telling you what you are feeling with regards the heat.

As I write this, the actual temperature is 35 deg, yet the heat index is showing 40 deg .... so yes, that is HOT and now you know why you are sweltering on this sunny Sunday afternoon!

    go for a swim. :-)

  2. The weather widget on my phone shows a cloud and thunderbolt with a big question mark placed over it for every single day of the week. Sadly, it's always accurate.

  3. And today WAS stupidly hot no? :) @Flora, you guys are East right? Do you think you get more lightening there? I think we get maybe three short storms a week here on average unless it's monsoon and then we might get 5-6. @Leone, my husband's work building is 10 minutes away and I can usually tell him it's raining about 15 minutes before it hits his office tower. Our home and his work seem to be on the same weather current however our friends in Clarke Quay will have totally different weather. Crazy.

  4. Hi Stacey, I was looking for a Singapore guide on my iphone ( do you know a good guide?) and on app store I came across Weather Lah which is free and gives a general forecast for each district separately.
The first time I saw different forecast for different areas I thought it's a bug! Now I understand better :)

btw: I am Noras and I have recently ( last week) moved to Singapore with my husband :)

  5. Welcome to Singapore Noras! Thanks for the app suggestion. That sounds like a good thing to have.
When we moved here I bought some books on Singapore. I ended up reading one of them cover to cover and it was actually really useful so I can recommend: Singapore, the complete resident's guide by Explorer. My edition is 2007 but I heard there's a new one out. If you can't find it, send me a message. You are welcome to my dog-eared copy as I don't need it any longer.

  6. Very wise of you to buy the book before coming to Singapore! Thanks for offering to lend me your book. Plus I would love to meet you in person!

  7. Likewise! I'm in my final push to finish a few projects over this next week but perhaps we can meet you guys for a drinks one evening? Actually on that note, it would be great to have an expat blog meetup eh Flora and Leone?
