Hosting Again

To me, one of life's greatest pleasures in that moment of a house brimming with energy, laughter, clinking glasses. That moment when a party starts to run on its own energy and you get to enjoy it fully. Everything up to that point is a bit of a mad dash, little details, cooking and baking and decorating. Anticipating needs and crossing things off lists. There's a deep creative pleasure for me in creating tables for gathering. I think about it and collect pieces all year. My co-conspirator in these plans has always been Renee, who my kids call Gigi. She's an antique collector and creator of really creative and spectacular events in her home. She's always pushing the envelope with quirky fun ideas mixed with history and then above all... comfort. Nothing should be too austere.

My other co-conspirator in great hosting escapade is often Nancy. My BFF of 34 years from Eastern Ontario homeschooling days. This year she flew down to visit just in time to help me pull off this event.

My client, Heirlooms Events, loaned us linens, tables, chairs, crystal (and those moss colored hobnail tumblers that were amazing) and Renee, who was in the middle of downsizing her home, sent up a collection of hotel silver to hold flowers. I scored a whole bucket of dahlias at Trader Joe's the day before. They turned out just the way I'd hoped. Those dewy peachy petals juxtaposing the tarnished silver.

It was a lovely afternoon and night, with lots of hugs and catching up. I wish Renee had been able to come up and join us too. Jessica made it up from LA though and the following morning, after SO much cleaning, Nancy, Jess and I hatched a plan to decompress and do the opposite of hosting...

Canadian Thanksgiving Year Two

Last year we hosted our first big Canadian Thanksgiving dinner at our new home and welcomed 22 of our friends and family here for an amazing meal. This year our numbers swelled to 32 and I like to think we honed our skills a little more with this being our second attempt at having such a large gathering.

As with the first year we did a sit-down meal. Moving our furniture outside onto the decks and moving rented tables in to accommodate the numbers. Guests brought side dishes and we did a 23lb turkey, a salmon and tri-tip and many many potatoes. I hired two local high school students to keep the kids entertained so parents could eat and enjoy themselves. It worked out very well. I only saw a brief glimpse of Austen who was having the time of his life.

People came from near and far. We had four of our guests drive and fly up from LA (7-8 hour drive) and my brother flew down from Vancouver. Lots of folks clocked in several hours driving from around the Bay Area with littles in the car to get here too. Quite amazing to have people put out all that effort to make this year such a success. Hats off to my brother, Adrian who did an amazing amount of prep work with us in the days prior. We could not have made all that food happen without him.

Hosting Thanksgiving, Canadian Style

Our first really big dinner party in the new house was our Canadian Thanksgiving dinner for 20. It was a big production with many helping hands and we all had a terrific feast. I'm hoping this will be a continuing tradition over here.

Giving Thanks

Three years ago we went to our family thanksgiving and then departed for California. Here we are again, all gathered around the table in a bittersweet celebration, saying hello and then good-bye. We are giving thanks right now for having this time. We are also giving thanks to everyone who visited with us this trip. We've got so many great memories to take with us when we leave for Singapore tomorrow morning.

I had so little time to see my family over thanksgiving so my Dad booked a float plane for me to be able to make it for a lunch and be back in Vancouver again for dinner. How crazy is that?

The float plane was a really great thing to do. We get so used to what BC looks like that we forget how breathtaking it is. I unfortunately only had my battered up old Canon powershot with me. Here are the pictures from my flight to Victoria.
